February 2021 Web Server Survey

By doing February 2021 Survey from which we received responses 1,204,252,411 Websites about 263.042.054 unique domains and 10,766,606 Computer facing the internet. This corresponds to an increase of 6,270,052 locations, 92,829 domains and 116,789 computers.

nginx tops the charts for the total number of websites, plus the number of unique domains and computers facing the internet. 34.5% of all websites run on Nginx, 30.4% of domains, and 35.0% of web-targeted computers. Apache ranks second on these metrics with a market share of 26.3% for websites, a similar share of domains of 26.4%, and 32.7% of computers with web contact.

In terms of domains, OpenResty and Cloudflare rank third and fourth, adding 14.4% and 7.1% of the market, respectively. OpenResty is a web application server based on Nginx technology, but strictly speaking it is not a Nginx fork. In the past, Cloudflare based its server stack on Nginx, but over time it switched to the use of proprietary technologies. Starting this month, these web server providers will be recorded individually in the monthly web server survey charts.

Although Nginx leads the broader market, Apache still has a small lead in the top 1 million locations with a market share of 25.6% – 2.4 percentage points ahead of Nginx. Apache increased its share of the top million in February by 0.54 percentage points. While OpenResty occupies a sizable chunk of the broader market, it’s nowhere near as common among the top million with a share of just 1.6%. This inequality can be explained by GoDaddy’s extensive use of OpenResty for domain parking.

Apache also has a more significant lead in terms of Netcraft’s active websites metric, which favors websites with unique content. Apache serves 25.5% of the active centers while Nginx serves 19.8%. Google has a relatively high 9.9% share of active websites due to its popular blogger service.

The market share of Microsoft server software continues to decline. Microsoft’s numbers declined significantly in 2020 in favor of OpenResty, and Microsoft has only 6.5% (-1.0 pp) of the site market and 6.0% (-0.3 pp) of domains as of February 2021. OpenResty is also expected to overtake Microsoft as the third largest provider in terms of websites and active websites.
