It is still unclear whether President Joe Biden will really be able to unite such a deeply divided country. Regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on, you’ll have to admit that there was still some humor to be found on Wednesday based on what’s posted on social media since the inauguration.
Countless photos of President Biden, recently sworn-in in President Biden, were shared on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, but some trending on social media were not of President Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.
Instead, a past president and a past president might have hopefully stolen the limelight.
Wake up Bill
First there were the photos of President Bill Clinton, who apparently nodded off during Biden’s speech.
@ Mayorofohio420 was among those quick to tweet: “LMAO BILL CLINTON IS SLEEPING WHILE BIDEN’S LANGUAGE”
@STFguitar added, “Somebody wakes Bill Clinton. Guys sleeping through another initiation like it was September or something.”
@mrsmehta was spot on with the snarky dig: “What’s up? Either he’s tired or he’s sleeping around!”
Even the official Twitter account of British tabloid The Daily Mail (@DailyMail) targeted President 42: “Bill Clinton appears to be asleep during Biden’s inauguration”.
Then there was the photo of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), sitting alone cross-legged and appearing to be his happy self. Many on Twitter and Facebook were quick to notice that he certainly took social distancing seriously, while of course he was ridiculed endlessly.
@jacobinmag suggested “when centrism is too much.”
The Vermont Democratic socialist was lightly teased for apparently sitting alone trying to stay warm. Even the People for Bernie (@ People4Bernie) got involved and posted “Caption Contest”.
A caption that may not have been as appreciated was from @BanquoDyar, which read, “When you have fewer friends in DC than Ted Cruz.”
Nicolas Heller (@NuevaYorkNico) showed off his Photoshop skills and published edited photos of Sanders to great effect: “I ask for some hand warmers again. (Made by me and @naomiotsu)”
@ExResurgam went one step further, promoting Sen. Sanders’ platform, which featured an edited photo with lawmakers at a “Medicare For All” filing desk.
@HistoryMuppet also used Photoshop and put Sanders on the balcony of The Muppets Show, which stood next to Waldorf for Heckler Statler, titled “If I wanted to sit down and watch some bad routines, I’d go back.” to the congress! “
@ Bloodyj4ck not only mocked the photo, but also called the cost of the clothes the Democratic Socialist wore to Wednesday’s event “too much drip,” suggesting an outfit that could set the Senator back by about $ 2,500 – but it is likely the ensemble will cost far less.
Then there was the pop culture outlet Vulture (@vulture), which focused on Sander’s demeanor and his choice of mittens: “The Post. The Mittens. The Social Distance.”
According to BuzzFeed policy reporter Ruby Cramer (@rubycramer) who tweeted, the story about Sanders’ mittens was actually a bit more. “Bernie’s mittens are made by Jen Ellis, a schoolteacher from Essex Junction, Vt. She gave them for him over 2 years ago and was surprised when he wore them on the campaign. They are made from reused wool sweaters and made from recycled fleece Plastic bottles lined. “
These tweets might not do much to heal, but it did show that many could find humor at a time when we could all need a laugh.
