In Doritos’ Tremendous Bowl Teaser, Jimmy Kimmel and Mindy Kaling React to a Thriller Visitor
Has anyone checked into the Matthews lately? Broderick, McConnaughey, Perry, how are you all – dimensionally speaking?
In a new teaser for Doritos’ 2021 Super Bowl ad, the brand points out that a mysterious Matthew may have opted for an easier way of being in the world.
On the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Urges host Mindy Kaling to “be cool” when she sees his next guest ready to take the stage. It has a new look, Kimmel explains to a confused Kaling: “Like a look that no one has had before.”
When Kaling turns, her jaw drops – and the screen goes black. #FlatMatthew will flash across the screen, followed by the Super Bowl date on February 7th.
Frito-Lay announced earlier this week that the Doritos Super Bowl ad, one of three spots the snack company will air during the Big Game, will focus on its new Doritos 3D crunch snack line – a reboot of a product from the late ones 90s.
While the product had a dedicated fan base, Doritos 3D was discontinued in the early 2000s. Now, after almost two decades, the brand is bringing them back into fashion.
Rachel Ferdinando, svp and CMO of the company, named the Doritos 3D Crunch Frito-Lay the “greatest innovation in ten years” and stated in a statement that the brand “wanted to share on a large scale”.
“It’s great to be able to showcase this groundbreaking taste at the Super Bowl with the help of the amazing Jimmy Kimmel and Mindy Kaling,” continued Ferdinando. “I can’t wait to reveal our third mysterious character in history.”
The brand has long been present in the Big Game and has established itself as a staple food through its 10-year “Crash the Super Bowl” competition, which ended in 2015. Doritos’ Super Bowl ad also showed significant star power last year. In the spot and its numerous teasers, actor Sam Elliot and hip-hop / country artist Lil Nas X played an Old West-style rivalry for a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.
With fans looking forward to February 7th, there will certainly be speculation about who – or what – has become two-dimensional in the service of Doritos 3D Crunch.
And with an estimated 1.5 million people named Matthew in the US alone, nobody can imagine who chose Flat Stanley treatment and why.
