Twitter has permanently blocked President Donald Trump’s account, the company said on Friday. This is a notable move given growing pressure on the social media network to remove it after the deadly riot at the Capitol earlier this week.

Twitter said it had decided to ban the president “because of the risk of further incitement to violence” after scrutinizing its recent tweets.
While Twitter has long been criticized for not doing enough to curb the spread of misinformation and hate speech on Trump’s account, the past few days have put pressure on prominent technicians, Democrats, and Twitter’s own staff for a permanent ban.
Up until that point, Twitter had only temporarily suspended Trump’s account for 12 hours over tweets in which the president said he “loved” the rioters who stormed the Capitol and declared the uprising as “things and events that happen if one holy landslide election victory so is. ” unceremoniously and viciously undressed. “
After the suspension expired, Trump called his followers “great patriots” and said he would not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration, which Twitter said could spark violence from his followers, resulting in a permanent ban.
Trump is not the only person permanently suspended after the deadly attempted insurrection in the U.S. Capitol. Twitter also removed several accounts that advanced QAnon’s conspiracy theories, including Sidney Powell, Mike Flynn, and former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins.
